Fresh off stellar season on the US collegiate circuit, rising Zimbabwean female sprinter Rujeko Munetsi has been named the 2024-25 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women’s Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year.

Munetsi, who is on a track and field scholarship at Mexico Highlands University made a splash in her debut season at the RMAC Championships.

She finished fourth in the 200-meter dash, fifth in the 60-meter dash, and was the lead leg of the Cowgirls’ 4×400 relay team, which finished fifth at the championships.

During the preliminary rounds of the 60m race at the 2025 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Colorado Springs, Munetsi set a new Zimbabwe record, recovering from a stumble out of the blocks to finish fifth in a blistering time of 7.40s.

In the process Munetsi significantly lowered the country’s long standing national women’s 60m record of 7.52 seconds set by former Olympian Winneth Dube in January, 2010.

Munetsi’s solid individual display and competitive time was also enough for her to earn a spot in the 2025 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships which took place from March 13–15 at the Fall Creek Pavilion at Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The rising Zimbabwean sprint queen was one of only three female athletes from her university who headed to the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis.

Additionally she was one of only two freshmen to appear at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Despite not advancing from the 60m dash preliminaries, Munetsi gained valuable experience which will steer her to more success as she switches her focus to the outdoor season.
