Sables ready to begin World Cup quest

    -

The Zimbabwe Sables say they are ready to begin their quest for the 2027 Rugby World Cup when their taken on Morocco in the Rugby Africa Cup quarterfinal at Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala Uganda tomorrow.

The team aims to end their 36 – year wait to qualify for the World Cup since their last appearance at the 1991 tournament.

Coach Piet Benade’s confidence in his squad is palpable. “The boys seem ready, they are in a good space,” he affirmed, highlighting a team that is not merely prepared, but poised for action. While acknowledging Morocco’s formidable French-based contingent and their physicality, Benade stressed the Sables’ focus.

“It’s going to be up to us to match their passion and to be super accurate. We know what’s on the line and what is at stake.”

This isn’t just about playing; it’s about executing a well-rehearsed plan.

Captain Hilton Mudariki echoed this unwavering resolve. After a game-day pitch run, he noted the team’s high spirits.

“Mentally we are prepared, we have done all the work because this journey started last year. Our preparations have gone well.”

This isn’t a last-minute scramble; it’s the culmination of dedicated effort.

The Sables’ readiness is no accident. Backed by Nedbank Zimbabwe and Alliance Health Zimbabwe, their preparation has been exhaustive since their 2024 triumph.

This includes a highly successful tour of the Middle East and Asia late last year, yielding impressive wins against the UAE and South Korea, which significantly honed their cohesion and confidence.

Benade’s squad selection further underscores their readiness, retaining the championship-winning core while integrating influential returnees like speedster Matthew McNab, gritty Jason Fraser, kicking stalwart Lenience Tambwera, and Australia-based halfback Ian Prior.

This blend of experience and dynamism speaks to a team engineered for success.

The stakes are clear: the tournament winner secures the sole automatic qualification ticket to the Rugby World Cup Australia 2027.

While a repechage offers a lifeline, the Sables’ laser focus is on seizing that direct entry.

Should they overcome Morocco, a semi-final clash awaits against either hosts Uganda or Kenya.

The stage is set, and the Sables are not just ready to play – they are ready to rewrite their rugby history.
